Vocal Faculty

The vocal faculty at UNM are well-known as both performers and teachers.  There is a close bond between vocal study and singing in choirs at UNM.

That being said, it is possible to be in a choir without studying voice (for example, we have many non-music majors involved in our choral program) just as it is possible to take voice lessons and not sing in a choir (though if one receives vocal instruction one must be in the appropriate "Major Ensemble," whether that be one of the choirs or the UNM Opera Studio).

We are very proud of the UNM voice faculty and list them below:

LESLIE UMPHREY (Head of Vocal Studies; co-director of Opera Program)

SAM SHEPPERSON (Diction for Singers; co-director of Opera Program)

PAULA CORBIN SWALIN (Vocal Pedagogy, Vocal Repertoire)

JACQUELINE ZANDER WALL (Vocal Artistry Competition)
